“When I first learnt about the Atlas Majors Medal, I got really excited at the possibility of exploring more of this beautiful country while doing what I love and getting a medal for it.
"It motivated me to train, to think differently about my approach to the sport and to push myself further outside my comfort zone to test my limits.
"I must say though, it wasn't easy, and that's the point.
"Everything that is worth doing in life is not meant to be easy, for if it were, no one would give it a second thought. It's the challenges that define us, the tribulations that push us to think differently and our accomplishments that help mould future generations.
"Achieving the Atlas Majors Medal inspired something in me that runs through every human being, and that is to always strive for greater by becoming better than you were yesterday.
"Completing a marathon is largely a mental game and you're constantly in your head, thinking all sorts of things, both positive and negative. Because you're putting your body under a lot of stress and the fact that you have so much time with yourself, your mind easily drifts off onto the superficial things like - I don't think I got enough sleep, my calves hurt, it's too hot, ok you can stop now, am I there yet, etc…
"It is precisely this mental toughness that motivated me out of bed at 4am in the middle of winter to run in the dark, spurred me on to do strength training late into the evening after a hard day's work, all while sacrificing some aspects of my social life.
"I found the challenge of completing all 4 marathons in one year, ultimately, a very humbling experience as it further reinforced to me the power of positive thinking and what you can do when you're willing to let go of thoughts that no longer serve you.
[Note: The four marathons do not have to be completed in the same year to achieve the Atlas Majors Medal - there is no time limit.].
"Positive thinking not only helps get you across the finish line, but is also essential for attracting people who resonate with your journey, and my achievements would not have been possible without the support of my loving partner Az Jackson, the encouragement and comradeship of my running mates, Vera, Perbel, and Imee, the rigorous strength and conditioning training from Wickedbodz Gym, and the trust and confidence of my Perskindol team.
"I would also like to thank all those beautiful people who have graced the start line with me, encouraged me to keep going when the going got tough on the race course and celebrated my triumphs as I crossed the finish line.
"I enjoyed exploring the Sunshine Coast, was delighted by the picturesque town of Hobart, loved the laid-back feel of Cairns but out of all of the four Atlas Major Marathons, the Brisbane Marathon stands out as my favourite.
"I have been running marathons for more than a decade and I would have to say that because of Brisbane's vibrant atmosphere, stunning city views running under the iconic Story Bridge, coupled with the warmth and encouragement of the crowd, I was able to achieve a personal best performance in a marathon, which I'm very grateful for.
"This experience has been one of the highlights of my year, by providing me with opportunities to explore new destinations, connect with amazing people and create beautiful memories.
"If you think you're ready to challenge your mental fortitude, then I would highly recommend adding the Atlas Majors Medal to your goals.”—Sheryll Quimosing, first female Atlas Majors Medal recipient.
